Self-cultivation (修身) names the classical view that conduct, learning, and habit are the levers a person actually holds, complementing the fixed chart. In Confucian framing it is the 修身 of the Great Learning; in 《了凡四训》 it is operationalized as reforming faults, doing good, and humility. It ties the "study" and "good deeds" factors of the folk maxim to a broader tradition that pairs the given chart with what a person chooses to do.
