Eight Characters · Four Pillars

BaZi, literally "eight characters," is the Four Pillars method: a heavenly stem and earthly branch for each of the birth year, month, day, and hour. In this system the eight characters are read as a structure of elements and relationships, not as a list of separate symbols. It is a solar method, so the pillars are fixed by the calendar position of the birth time rather than by Western or lunar dates alone.
